Current Courses

Beginners Classes

Stephen's Beginners' course is continuing with lessons on Wednesday afternoons (from 1.45pm) and Monday evenings (from 7.15pm). There's no lesson on Easter Monday, but otherwise these lessons continue until April 27th. A full list of dates is available at the Club, or for more information contact Stephen on 0117 962 0068 or via stephen_royal@hotmail.com.

There is a Beginners' competition on Wednesday 29 April.

Improvers Classes

Stephen's Year 2 course continues with lessons on Wednesday evenings from 7.15pm. For more information about the topics being covered each week, contact Stephen on 0117 962 0068 or via stephen_royal@hotmail.com.

We have a new drop-in session on a Wednesday evening which is completely informal and open to all. You can bring a partner or turn up on your own, and play bridge at a gentle pace with help available if you need it. Run by Stuart King, the aim of this session is just to get you playing without having to worry about doing the wrong thing, and to introduce you to some club members. For this session only, you don't have to be a member and it is free to attend! From 6.30pm - drop in!

Stuart also runs a gentle Supervised Play session on Saturday mornings at 10.0am. Again, you can turn up without a partner and Stuart will run you through hands that cropped up in duplicate sessions during the week. This is a great session to help you transition to duplicate play after learning to play.

When you are ready to try your hand (we're all about puns) at a duplicate session, we recommend our Monday evening Supervised Play session at 7.15pm. The director, our resident expert, Terry, will be available to give you advice on bidding and play. If you need a partner, turn up a little early and Terry will organise one for you.

Friday evening is also a gentle duplicate session where you can play the hands at a comfortable pace, though without supervision. Regular players take part in a competition suitable for 2nd year students. 7.15 to 10.45pm

After gaining confidence playing on a Monday or Friday evening, improvers could move on to playing in a No Fear pairs competition on a Friday morning (10am-1pm), again gentle duplicate playing 21 hands at a fairly relaxed pace.

A good way of improving your game is to play against more experienced players. Monday and Wednesday afternoons (1.15pm-4.45pm) are medium level duplicate sessions where you play 24 or 26 hands - a couple of steps up in the level of competition.

Mentor Scheme

To help less experienced players transition to unfamiliar sessions, we have set up a Mentor Scheme to make it all a lot less scary! For each session, we have a pool of experienced players available to play with you the first time (or two) you try a new session. They can show you the ropes, introduce you to people, and generally help you feel more at ease. If you would like to try out a new session with a mentor's help, contact Stephen Royal on 0117 929 1846.
